We believe that people with diabetes, and their loved ones, should be the best prepared and motivated to take control of their health. TCOYD offers a unique and very personal way to understand diabetes and to help the people who are living with diabetes become the most active members of their health care teams.
Through conferences and health fairs in cities across the nation, TCOYD annually brings thousands of people with diabetes - and their loved ones - into contact with medical, legal and other professionals. At very low cost, an average of 1,200 participants at each conference spend a full day with noted experts in general sessions and in several practical and understandable workshops. They make their choices from among the multiple topics that are offered. Valuable one-on-one consultations with professionals - from podiatrists to psychologists to nutrition experts - are also available to each participant. Throughout the sessions, participants receive unbiased information on the latest findings of clinical research, the emergence of new equipment and medications, proper diet and exercise, legal and insurance issues and the resources that are available to people with diabetes and their families.
At the midday break, a seated banquet luncheon features a keynote speaker. Consistently conference highlights, the speakers are models of living well with diabetes. Their personal accounts of how they took control of their own disease are often moving and always highly inspirational for our audiences.
Our health fairs include 35-60 informational booths, offering ample opportunity for direct conversation with the major manufacturers of diabetes medications and supplies, as well as, providers of services and programs available for people with diabetes in their local communities.
Questions are answered. Fears are eased. And people with diabetes gain control of their disease.
With the education and support provided by TCOYD, people with diabetes learn to look at life differently and to appreciate what others take for granted. "I can live a normal life and do anything I want to do without letting diabetes get in my way," is the mindset that is encouraged through every TCOYD conference.
TCOYD promotes three main themes:
- You have the main responsibility for taking control of your diabetes.
You will be the one to benefit from avoiding complications when you take control.
- You are your own best advocate.
In the increasingly complex environment of managed care and shrinking health care dollars, you must become educated about, and involved with, the medical and administrative aspects of your health care system to ensure access to proper tests, the most effective medications and the latest medical devices.
- Be smart and be persistent.
Stay current on the various treatment options available to preserve your physical and mental health over the long term.
People with diabetes attending a TCOYD conference find themselves in the unique position of being in the majority - in a major conference hall filled with other people who have diabetes, and with professionals in diabetes. The conference and its materials are professionally produced and completely focused on educating and motivating people with diabetes to become their own best advocates.
Since our inception in 1995, our not-for-profit TCOYD has presented more than 80 (and growing!) one-day conferences and health fairs in cities across America, with more than 100,000 people in attendance. Our low registration fee for the full day includes access to all general sessions, workshops and the health fair and opportunities for individual consultations, as well as the banquet lunch featuring a keynote speaker. The registration fee represents less than 20% of our cost for each person, and, financial aid with a minimum copay is available to all those in need of assistance.
