COURSE OBJECTIVES
- Describe the role of GLP-1 in humans and give a clinically relevant explanation of the incretin story.
- Review the pertinent literature on exenatide including an update on the most recent clinical trial data.
- Explain the main mechanisms of action of exenatide and its effects on insulin and glucagon levels, glycemic control and weight reduction.
- Discuss the physiologic secretion of insulin in normal, type 1 and type 2 diabetic states.
- Design and implement individualized insulin regimens for patients with type 2 diabetes.
- Identify the pros and cons of various insulin strategies including combination therapy, split mixed approach, basal bolus regimens, and pump therapy.
- Describe the benefits of, and identify appropriate candidates for, insulin pump therapy.
- Discuss latest findings concerning patient motivation and how it influences self-management of diabetes.
- Recognize the emotional and physical barriers to initiation of insulin therapy faced by patients with type 2 diabetes and utilize strategies to overcome these barriers.
- Develop major behavioral strategies for enhancing diabetes self-management.
