Making The Connection: Cutting Edge Strategies for Diabetes Care
There continues to be a growing incidence and prevalence of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes in the United States and around the world. Despite significant advances, the vast majority of people with diabetes have inadequate glycemic control. In addition to poor diabetes control, coronary heart disease remains the most common cause of death in people with diabetes, highlighting the importance of concentrating on reducing cardiovascular risk factors.
The goal of this course is to educate providers about the most effective strategies to help their patients with diabetes reach their treatment goals and avoid the associated acute and chronic complications. This course will focus on four cutting-edge topics in diabetes care: Prevention of heart disease and type 2 diabetes using TZD’s; incretin mimetics for treating type 2 diabetes; insulin regimens for people with type 2 diabetes; and new evidence-based motivational strategies to improve patient self management.
This information will be clinically oriented with presentation of current and important landmark clinical trials.
In addition, this course will offer a truly unique learning opportunity. It is being held in tandem with a separate, yet similar, patient education conference and will give providers the opportunity to observe and interact with people who have diabetes and are engaged in their own intensive educational environment. Making that connection with patients, providers will acquire new skills and insight into what empowers patients with diabetes to develop healthy self-management of their diabetes.
| OBJECTIVES
1. Discuss latest findings concerning patient motivation and how it influences self-management of diabetes.
2. Explain concepts and practical issues in initiation of combination therapy and the role of TZDs in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
3. Give an overview of the role of GLP-1 in humans and a clinically relevant explanation of the incretin mimetic story.
4. Review current literature on exenatide and DPP4 inhibitors.
5. Describe in detail therapeutic strategies indicated when a patient fails metformin and/or sulfonylurea therapy, to include adding a TZD, insulin, exenatide, or an alpha glucosidase inhibitor.
6. Review pros and cons of various insulin strategies including combination therapy, split mixed approach and basal bolus regimens.
7. Design and implement individualized insulin regimens for patients with type 2 diabetes.
8. Understand emotional and physical barriers to initiation of insulin therapy faced by patients with type 2 diabetes and strategies to overcome these barriers.
9. Discuss major behavioral strategies for enhancing diabetes self-management. |
