Steven V. Edelman, M.D.
Diabetologist Founder and Director, Taking Control of Your Diabetes Professor of Medicine UCSD School of Medicine VA Medical Center, San Diego
David Marrero, PhD
Medicine, Indiana University School of Medicine and he serves as Director
of the Translation Research Center at IU. Dr. Marrero is an expert in the
field of clinical trails in diabetes. He helped design the Diabetes Prevention
Program and the TRIAD study, which evaluated strategies to improve
diabetes care delivery in managed care settings. Dr. Marrero has been
living well with type 1 diabetes for 30 years.
Paris Roach, MD
Dr. Paris Roach is Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, Division of
Endocrinology and Metabolism, Indiana University School of Medicine.
Dr. Roach's primary research interest is the development of tools to increase
patients' participation in their own care. He currently serves as the director
of the endocrinology fellowship training program at the Indiana University
School of Medicine.
Melinda S. Kelly, RN, CDE
Ms. Susie Kelly is a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator. She is
the Program Coordinator for the Diabetes Prevention Program Outcomes
Study at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Ms. Kelly has been
living well with type 1 diabetes since she was diagnosed at the age of 12
years. She has worn an insulin pump for 20 years and also serves as an
insulin pump trainer.
Urban Miyares
Urban Miyares is a nationally recognized blinded Vietnam veteran
with diabetes, an entrepreneur, motivational speaker and educator,
mentor, author/writer, inventor and patent holder, a television and
film personality, and world-class athlete!
In 1985, Urban founded the Disabled Businesspersons Association, a national, volunteerbased
charity assisting in the rehabilitation and back-to-work of people with disabilities.
He is also director of both the Western Region Veterans Business Resource Center and
Challenged America, a free learn-to-sail recreational rehabilitation program for kids and
adults with disabilities.
Urban was a member of the record-setting Challenged America 2003 Transpac Team,
the first crew of sailors with significant disabilities to race in the 98-year history of the
Transpacific ("Transpac") Yacht Race from Los Angeles to Hawaii.
In 2004, Urban received a kidney transplant and has been able to continue his busy
life-style without interruption.
