Douglas Cairns
Douglas Cairns was a jet pilot and flight instructor in the British Royal Air Force when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and had his pilot's license revoked. Eventually, he began flying again with a qualified instructor on board and obtained a United States medical license to fly solo privately by meeting certain medical requirements. 'Diabetes World Flight' was born to show that it is possible for pilots to fly safely according to US FAA regulations. Douglas Cairns flew around the world in 159 days. He is a living example that diabetes does not have to limit the scope of our dreams.
