Special Guest Lunch Speaker
Douglas Cairns
Douglas Cairns was a jet pilot and flight instructor in the British Royal Air Force (RAF) when, in 1989, he
was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. With his pilot's license revoked because of his diabetes, Douglas left
the RAF, changed careers and relocated in Thailand.
In 1997, Douglas began flying again in Thailand with a qualified flying instructor on board. In 1999, he
discovered that it was possible to obtain a United States medical license to fly solo privately in the US by
meeting certain medical requirements. He obtained that license!
'Diabetes World Flight' was born to show that it is possible for such pilots to fly safely according to US FAA
regulations. Douglas Cairns flew around the world in 159 days, making 63 flights over 26,300 nautical miles
and visiting 22 countries. He is an example that diabetes does not have to limit the scope of our dreams.

Special Guest Speaker
Zippora Karz
Zippora Karz is a delightful woman with a talent for dance, and a determination to
live her dream in spite of the obstacles she has encountered along the way. "When
you have a love for something, and you're willing to really take care of yourself,
diabetes will not stop you", says the ballerina. Zippora knows what she is talking
about. She was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 21 years while she was a young
dancer with the New York City Ballet pursuing her career.
Zippora's many accomplishments include dancing the roles of the Sugar Plum and Dewdrop Fairies in
George Balanchine's 'The Nutcracker','Swan Lake', 'Apollo', 'The Four Temperments', as well as ballets by the
famed Jerome Robins and Peter Martins. Now retired from performing on the stage, Zippora is the official
staging representative of the George Balanchine Trust and she teaches ballet around the world. Zippora will
share her inspiring story of living her dream and living well with her diabetes. She will share with you her
love of moving to music with people of all ages.
