Special Guest Speakers

Della Reese
Della Reese
Della Reese began singing in church in her hometown of Detroit, Michigan when she was six years old. This early introduction to the world of gospel set the stage for Della¹s music legacy that has spanned five decades. Della is perhaps best known for her work on the CBS network hit ³Touched By An Angel,² for which she has received an Emmy Award nomination as well as five consecutive NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Television Drama Series. Several years ago, Della was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. After working with her health- care team, she has learned to be stronger than diabetes by eating right, staying active and taking medication every day. She is now publicly revealing her personal story with type 2 diabetes with the hope of educating and motivating others with the disease.

Douglas Cairns Douglas Cairns was a jet pilot and flight instructor in the British Royal Air Force (RAF) when, in 1989, he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. With his pilot's license revoked because of his diabetes, Douglas left the RAF and changed careers.

In 1999, Douglas discovered that it was possible to obtain a United States medical license to fly solo privately by meeting certain medical requirements. He obtained that license. 'Diabetes World Flight' was born to show that it is possible for such pilots to fly safely according to US FAA regulations. Douglas Cairns flew around the world in 159 days, flying over 26,300 nautical miles and visiting 22 countries. He is a living example that diabetes does not have to limit the scope of our dreams.
