Billy Mills
Olympic Champion Billy Mills is an Ogala Lakota (Sioux) born and raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Orphaned at the age of 12, he chose running as a positive focus in his life. After thousands of miles of training, Billy became the first and only American to win a gold medal in the 10,000 meter race in the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. Setting an Olympic record of 28 minutes 24.4 seconds, Billy's accomplishment remains a great source of pride to American Indian people.

Douglas Cairns was a jet pilot and flight instructor in
the British Royal Air Force (RAF) when, in 1989, he was
diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. With his pilotÕs license
revoked because of his diabetes, Douglas left the RAF
and changed careers.
In 1999, Douglas discovered that it was possible to obtain a
United States medical license to fly solo privately by meeting
certain medical requirements. He obtained that license. ÔDiabetes
World FlightÕ was born to show that it is possible for such pilots
to fly safely according to US FAA regulations. Douglas Cairns
