"TCOYD advocates learning and good care and that is why this organization is best suited to what I felt my race is about," said Barbara Selstad, who will ride across the country in an all-woman over age 50 tour. With type 1 and type 2 diabetes woven throughout her family, Barbara is committed to diabetes education.
A resident of Washington, Barbara will start her race in TCOYD's backyard here in San Diego on March 6th, and she'll finish in St. Augustine, Florida, on May 2nd. While cycling, running, and swimming since the mid 1970s, the recent path to cross-country level fitness has had its bumps. Last October, while averaging several hundred miles a week, Barbara crashed off her bicycle and broke her hip. "Pain will be your guide," were the wise words of her orthopedist, as she got back on saddle only 6 weeks ago to begin the uphill climb to regain the strength and endurance she'll need for the race. Her current training regimen includes a few hours of indoor cycling on a trainer (avoiding the Washington snow), swimming and workouts at the gym. After 4 months of recovery time, she Barbara has returned to riding outside as she continues to train for the big start on March 6th.
Heather Neilsen Clute, a dear friend of TCOYD of many years, is Barbara's daughter. She commented, "My mom's efforts at exercise and her general lifestyle choices are amazing examples of diabetes prevention in action." The TCOYD family is proud and appreciative of Barbara's efforts.
