TCOYD Launches Latino Miniseries
This summer TCOYD began a new
series of presentations in Spanish
only for the Latino community of
San Diego. Held at the Sharp Chula
Vista Medical Center, the miniseries
is spearheaded by TCOYD volunteer
Latino director, Leonel Villa
Caballero, MD.
"I'm delighted that this new program
will enable many Spanish-speakers the
opportunity to hear TCOYD's message
of diabetes education, motivation and
self advocacy without any language
barrier," said TCOYD Founder and
Director Steven V. Edelman, MD.
In California, more than 400,000
Latinos have been identified with
diabetes. Latinos suffer disproportionately
more long-term diabetes
complications, such as diabetic
retinopathy, neuropathy, and amputations
than other ethnic groups.
"The Latino TCOYD initiative is a
commitment to help the Latino
community with diabetes, by providing
diabetes education and motivation en
Espa–ol, using
appropriate
cultural sensitivity,"
said
Caballero.
Like TCOYD's
original San
Diego Miniseries
program, the
Latino program
is made possible
by local medical professionals who
volunteer their time to present on
various topics in diabetes health.
The Latino Miniseries takes
place at Sharp Chula Vista Medical
Center in the Nelly Barrington
Room (751 Medical Center Court,
Chula Vista, CA 91911). For more

TCOYD office at 858-755-5683 and
