Taking Control of Your Diabetes Conference and Health Fair Returns to Amarillo, September 16
Amarillo, TX - In Texas alone, more than 1,300,000 individuals over the age of 18 are living with
diabetes, a serious and lifelong condition. Currently about 23 million people in the United States,
and roughly 8 percent of the population of Texas, have some form of diabetes - and these numbers
are only expected to increase as the obesity epidemic continues. Amarillo is hosting a not-for-profit
educational and motivational event to aid Texans with this disease.
Leading diabetes health professionals from Amarillo have partnered with Taking Control of Your
Diabetes, 501(c)3, (TCOYD) to present national and local diabetes experts at a day-long educational
conference and health fair. TCOYD plans conferences and health fairs focused on educating, motivating
and giving hope to individuals and families affected by diabetes. The event will be held on September
16 at the Amarillo Civic Center and is the second TCOYD conference in Amarillo. Featuring leading
experts in diabetes care, the Taking Control of Your Diabetes conference will enable individuals with
type 1 or type 2 diabetes and their family members to learn practical advice and developments in
treatment, and speak one-on-one with diabetes specialists, including physicians, pharmacists,
dieticians and foot specialists.
"With the increase in obesity, more and more Texans are being diagnosed every day with diabetes.
This conference and health fair is a great way to learn as much as you possibly can in one day and
in one location from a variety of diabetes experts. We want to help individuals and families living
with diabetes to be educated, motivated and empowered to take control of their diabetes," says
William C. Biggs, MD, of Amarillo Medical Specialists, and conference co-chair.
The conference session topics include: nutrition, with special emphasis on fats and carbohydrates;
hypoglycemia issues; concerns of parents raising children with diabetes; insulin therapies; and
treatments for the affects of diabetes on the heart, nervous system, emotional health and kidneys.
This conference meets Type 1 criteria for mandatory continuing education requirements toward
relicensure as established by the Board for Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas.
A health fair featuring informational exhibits will be open throughout the day. Lunch is included
and will feature keynote speaker Bo Irvine, a national-headlining comedian whose personal
experience with diabetes has shaped his comic genius, inspiring people with diabetes through
humor.
Founded and directed by Steven V. Edelman, MD, an endocrinologist with type 1 diabetes himself, TCOYD
is a San Diego, California-based 501(c)3 charitable organization dedicated to educating and motivating
people with diabetes, and their loved ones, to take a more active role in their condition to live
healthier, happier and more productive lives. Seventy-four (74) TCOYD conferences have been held
throughout the United States during the past 11 years. More than 1000 attendees and 40 pharmaceutical
and health care exhibitors are expected to attend the 2006 Amarillo TCOYD Conference and Health Fair.
Pre-registration is recommended. Registration for the event begins at 7:30 a.m. followed by the
conference at 8:30 a.m. Early registration fees are $25 for one person or $20 per person when two
or more people register together. Early registration should be postmarked on or before September 8.
The late registration fee is $30 for one person and $25 when two or more people register together.
On-site registration is also $30. Lunch is included in registration fees. In keeping with its
mission, TCOYD raises funds from supporters and educational grants to offset the actual per-person
cost of the conference in order to keep the registration fee to participants as low as possible.
