TCOYD Returns to Silicon Valley, September 15, 2007
Premier Patient Conference & Health Fair Heads Back to Santa Clara

Taking Control of Your Diabetes, 501(c)3 (TCOYD) conference and health fair will be held September 15, 2007, at the Santa Clara Convention Center bringing national and local medical experts in diabetes care to people with all types of diabetes, those at risk for diabetes, and their loved ones for a day of highly informative and motivational programs. This unique conference will include a special program for kids and teenagers living with diabetes.

Over 8% of the population of California has diabetes and 3,000 new cases are diagnosed every day. African Americans, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and Latinos are at increased risk of developing this chronic disease, which is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the U.S.

The nonprofit diabetes education organization, Taking Control of Your Diabetes, has presented over 80 conferences throughout the country to help the 23 million Americans cope and stay informed about treating diabetes and its complications.   The all-day event presents speakers, small group workshops, and one-on-one sessions with specialists such as physicians, pharmacists, psychologists, dieticians, exercise physiologists, diabetes educators and foot specialists.

The lunch speaker is record setting strength athlete Doug Burns, who holds bodybuilding titles including Mr. USA and Mr. Universe.   Mr. Burns will share his personal story, living well with type 1 diabetes.

"It is our belief that the most efficient and effective way to improve diabetes care is to educate the people who are living with diabetes about the best ways to control this condition and prevent complications," said Steven Edelman, M.D., diabetes specialist and founder of Taking Control of Your Diabetes.   Dr. Edelman was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 15.

"We are dedicated to educating and motivating people with diabetes and their loved ones to take an active role in their condition in order to live healthier and happier lives," he said.

Health professionals from The Health Trust, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente and the Diabetes Coalition of Santa Clara County, and a host of other diabetes specialists have partnered with Taking Control of Your Diabetes to hold this premier conference and health fair.

Early registration fees are $35 for one person, or $30 when two or more people register together.   Registration fees include lunch, healthy snacks and all conference activities.   On-site registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and costs $40. The event is from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.   Conference attendees will receive a copy of the new 3rd Edition of Dr. Edelman's highly acclaimed book, Taking Control of Your Diabetes . Financial aid is available for those who need assistance.   More information is available at www.tcoyd.org or by calling 800-998-2693.
