1,000 Diabetics in Silicon Valley will Gather to Learn How to Control Their Disease, Prevent Complications
A unique conference for people with diabetes that provides them with ideas and information on how to take control of their health is coming to Silicon Valley on Saturday, Oct 7, at the Santa Clara Convention Center.
1,000 people are expected to attend, including several hundred from the Hispanic community where diabetes joins obesity as the most common major health threats. More than 8% of the population of California is living with diabetes, and 3,000 new cases are diagnosed every day. African Americans, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and Latinos are at increased risk of developing the chronic disease, which is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the U.S.
The not-for-profit diabetes education organization, Taking Control of Your Diabetes, has presented 75 conferences throughout the country to help the 23 million Americans who have diabetes. The all-day event presents speakers, small group workshops, and one-on-one sessions with specialists such as physicians, pharmacists, ophthalmologists, dieticians, exercise physiologists, diabetes educators and foot specialists. People with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes, their family members, and medical professionals involved in the care of those with diabetes are welcome to attend.
The banquet speaker is Joseph B. Nelson, an acclaimed national presenter and psychologist specializing in issues commonly faced by people with diabetes and other chronic conditions.
ÒIt is our belief that the most effective way to improve diabetes care is to educate the people who are living with diabetes about the best ways to control this condition and prevent complications,Ó said Steven V. Edelman, MD, diabetes specialist and founder of Taking Control Of Your Diabetes. Edelman was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 15.
ÒWe are dedicated to educating and motivating people with diabetes and their loved ones to take an active role in their condition in order to live healthier and happier lives,Ó he said.
The local conference is co-sponsored by The Health Trust, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente and the Diabetes Coalition of Santa Clara County.
A health fair featuring informational exhibits will be open throughout the day.
Early registration fees are $35 for one person, or $30 when two or more people register together. Registration fees include lunch, healthy snacks and all conference activities. Onsite registration begins at 7:30 and costs $40. The Conference is from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Financial aid is available for all who need assistance.
